the journey

The brief was to come up with a contemporary presentation of the Easter story, to impact people who've never been near a church; to explain, simply and vividly, what happened and why, in a mixed media exhibition designed to travel.

journey 1
The imagery is a continuation of the then and now of the 'Nativity for a New Year'(download it here); the military occupation, the brutal treatment of prisoners...nothing's changed, the crucifixion story could be happening now....

It's set out as a Stations of the Cross', but the immediacy of seeing things happening through large holes in the wall, and the realistic and honest depiction of the story make it an emotional experience.

journey 2The accompanying text is written to explain the theatre of the action; the background of the prophecies and fulfilment, what Jesus understood about God's script, and the foreground of what actually happened on stage. It sets out to answer questions without jargon or fudging the difficult issues. It can be printed out for display in an appropriate medium to suit the forum (mounted paper, acetate etc.).

It could also work as an audio experience if the images are projected as a sequence rather than a visual display.

We also encourage a working party from the hosting group to create a thought-provoking 'last supper' room for people to walk through, as if Jesus and the disciples had just left.

The end experience of The Journey is a quiet response section - if there isn't a separate room - where the specially written dvd can be set up on a loop; Jesus is real, the journey is real, our relationship matters to him.

Putting The Journey on is an opportunity to open up church and try out new ways of getting people in to experience, not just learn about, the Easter story.
